Barrick invests USD 4.24 billion in Tanzania through Twiga Minerals

Barrick Gold Corporation through the establishment of the Twiga joint venture has invested over USD 4.24 in Tanzania since 2019, it has been disclosed.


Twiga Minerals comprises Bulyanhulu and North Mara gold mines, and in 2024 alone it contributed USD 888 million.


Mark Bristow, the Barrick President and CEO said Thursday, January 23, 2025, that the Twiga partnership continues to lead Tanzania's extractive sector creating thousands of jobs, supporting local businesses, and financing community ptojects.


Barrick has instituted a policy of local employment and development as 96 per cent of the 6,185 strong work force are Tanzanians with 53 per cent coming from neighbouring villages close to the mining centres.


Bristow said last year his company invested USD 5 million for clean and safe drinking water, health and education, bringing the total investment to community projects to USD 15.8 million since Barrick formed the Twiga partnership in 2019.


The Barrick president said Twiga has won praise for safety, employer status, environmental performance and community engagement.


For North Mara, it has been the largest contributor to Tanzania's ectractive indiustry.
