Barrick north Mara Gold Mine has won praise as one of the investors and stakeholders who are in the forefront of helping victims of disasters in Mara region.
Speaking yesterday while receiving a donation of cash and various items from the Tarime based mine for Musoma municipal residents affected by recent heavy rains that destroyed their dwellings, Mara Regional Commissioner, Col Evans Mtambi, said Barrick and some of its contractors had displayed a sense of patriotism of the highest degree to the needy affected people.
A total of 45m/-. 200 bags of cement and 20 mattresses were handed over to Col. Mtambi as assistance to help the affected Musoma residents.
“I thank Barrick and other stakeholders. This is the Tanzanian spirit; I as Regional Commissioner, I’m proud of your presence. I can’t get the best words to express my sincere thanks because the situation of the victims affected by the rains was pathetics,” Col. Mtambi said.
North Mara Gold Mine is joint venture between Barrick and the Tanzania government administered through Twiga Minerals.
Barrick’s assistance is a response to President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s support of 100m/- to the Musoma residents whose houses were destroyed by the rains recently rendering them homeless.
The Regional Commissioner promised to cooperate with a committee tasked to restore normalcy to lives of the Musoma residents affected by the rains to ensure that the BarrIck assistance reaches them.
He said already some people have been helped to get their basic needs while others still need humanitarian assistance.
He said infrastructures such as roads and power have already been restored.
Juma Chikoka, the Musoma District Commissioner, said the rains had damaged various buildings which include a police post, a primary school, a mosque and business premises.
