Barrick begins handing over desks to Tarime schools under its CSR programme

Barrick North Mara Gold Mine has begun handing over its first batch of 215 out of its planned 9,000 desks for schools in Tarime district in Mara region.


The desks, worth 898m/-, follow under the mine's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme to nearby communities and the Tarime District Council.


North Mara Gold Mine is run by a joint venture company, Twiga Minerals Ltd, owned by the government of Tanzania and the global mining conglomerate, Barrick Corporation.


The desks were handed over last weekend to Tarime District Commissioner, Major Edward Gowele, who thanked the giant gold mine management for its contribution to Tarime's socio-economic development.


He said the mine has played a major role in providing equipment to primary and secondary schools in the district to improve the education sector.


The mine has awarded all tenders for making the desks to local businesspeople in as part of its employment policy of empowering the local population.


"We expect these desks will reduce the prevailing shortage in our schools. I take this opportunity to thank North Mara Gold Mine for its huge contribution towards uplifting our education sector," Major Gowele said at the handing-over ceremony held at Kewanja Primary School.


He thanked President Samia Suluhu Hassan for attracting investors in key sectors of the national economy.


On his part, Barrick North Mara Gold Mine Community  Relations Manager, Francis Uhadi, said the desks- making project is one of 101 other projects worth one billion shillings being implemented under the mine's CSR programme.
