A White House meeting held Friday between US president Donald Trump and his Ukranian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, culminated into a drama, forcing the latter to leave the Oval Office abruptly without signing a much-touted minerals deal.
The Ukranian leader, at war with Russia for four years, declined to apologise for the diplomatic spat but wanted the US president to be more on the Ukraine’s side.
However, Trump threatened: “You are either going to make the deal or we’re out.”
He said the Ukranian leader “disrespected” the US and “overplayed his hand.”
Trump and his Vice President JD Vance berated Zelensky for being “disrespectful” and not thanking the US enough for its support.
“Yoù’re gambling with the lives of millions of people. You are gambling with World War II,” Trump shouted during the meeting.
Zelesnky was meeting Trump to convince him not to side with Russian president Vladimir Putin and to discuss possible US security guarantees for Ukraine on the event of a ceasefire.
He later posted on X after the meeting thanking the US government for its support. “Ukraine needs just and lasting peace; and we are working exactly for that,” he wrote.
European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen posted on X a message of solidarity with Zelensky: “Your dignity honours the bravery of Ukranian people. Be strong, be brave, be fearless.”
