Mara Regional Commissioner Col. Evans Mtambi has received another batch of furniture for schools from Barrick North Mara meant for primary and secondary schools in Tarime District Council.
In total, the RC received 310 desks for primary schools and 295 chairs and tables for secondary schools.
The furniture comes from CSR funds in Barrick North Mara, a joint venture with the government , through Twiga Minerals Corporation.
“ I have inspected the furniture and I’m satisfied. It is of high quality and meets the set standards,” said the RC during the handing over ceremony yesterday ( Monday), at Ingwe Secondary School in Nyamongo township.
The RC commended the mine for implementing the school furniture project whose total cost is estimated at shs 898m/- upon completion.
Students and local community leaders from villages surrounding the mine attended the function.
A couple of weeks earlier, Tarime District Commissioner Maj Edward Gowele received the first batch of the furniture. Four local contractors are implementing the project comprising 900 pieces of furniture.
Speaking during the handing over function, Barrick North Mara General Manager Apolinary Lyambiko said the school furniture is one of the 101 projects lined up for implementation in Tarime District Council at a total cost of 9bn/- from the company’s CSR Programme.
Tarime Member of Parliament Mwita Waitara commended Barrick North Mara for the donation, saying the company supports social and economic development of the constituency.
Mr Waitara reiterated his support for the company, stressing that it is beneficial to the local people and the nation.
“ This is an investor who is doing a great deal for the people. He has empowered many groups . We have no problem with the company,” said Mr Waitara.
The mine has disbursed billions of shillings, including service levy to the district council and royalty to five villages surrounding it.
The MP also stated that the current relations between the mine and the local community have been quite healthy.
“We have strengthened our relations and as the MP of this area, I strongly support the government and the mine,’’ said Mr Waitara.
