Minister of Minerals Anthony Mavunde has said that residents of Geita region deserve to reap proceeds from the presence of the Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) in their locality through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.

He told a meeting held in Dodoma yesterday that Geita residents want to see direct results from the presence of the giant mining company in their area through the implementation of CSR community projects in sectors which have direct impact to their lives.

The minister said this during a meeting with high-ranking officials from his ministry, Mining Commission, regional office, Geita region Members of Parliament and representatives from GGML.

The meeting, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Minerals, was specifically convened to discuss the GGML challenges in the implementation of CSR projects and to craft concrete strategies so that Geita residents also reap the benefits of mineral wealth found in their area.

“I have called this meeting to find the best ways of implementing the CSR programme and iron out the existing challenges to enable Geita residents benefit from the natural resources in their area,” Mavunde explained.

“There’s need to complete the implementation of the 2018-2021 community projects to enable the establishment of new projects,” the minister empahisised.

Mavunde gave a three-day ultimatum to GGML authorities to meet with the Geita municipal and district council directors to prepare and present a report on the implementation of the 2018-1021 CSR projects.

Anglo Ashanti-Gold vice-president, Simon Shayo, said GGML “is ready to cooperate with the Geita regional leadership to ensure that its residents benefit from the CSR projects which have been allocated 21bn/-.”

On his part, Geita Regional Commissioner, Martin Shigela, urged GGML authorities to have close cooperation with the regional leadership to ensure timely implementation of projects agreed upon.

Three legislators, Constantine Kanyasu, Joseph Musukuma and Tumaini Magesa, urged GGML to stick to qualitative implementation of the CSR projects to ensure value for money.

Annually, GGML contributes 9.2bn/- to finance CSR projects in Geita region.
